When To Use Polyaspartics Versus Epoxy? At Buffalo Concrete Coatings, we know the differences between polyaspartic and epoxy coatings. By answering just four critical questions we have outlined for you, decide which product will work best for your project!
Temperature: epoxy coatings are typically installed at, or above, 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Polyaspartics, urethanes, and other polyureas, however, have an installation temperature that can go as low as into the negative double-digits!
UV radiation: while there are UV resistant additives made specifically for epoxy, polyurea coatings are naturally far more UV resistant. This means less yellowing/discoloring throughout the life of your floor!
Drying time: epoxy can take up to 48 hours to fully cure depending on the environment it's been installed in. Polyaspartic coatings will set up and begin curing rapidly. This is beneficial for a facility or homeowner under great time constraints.
However, there are a couple things to consider!
Due to the short amount of time polyaspartics have to move freely and be installed properly; it's vital to have a crew of at least three people. One will spread the material with a squeegee, one will roll, and one will cut in the edges. If you are also applying color chips to your polyaspartic floor, a fourth person is recommended as any chips that are applied to an already tacky/semi-cured floor may not stick into the material.
Polyaspartics are also typically applied in thinner coats due to the nature of the drying time and material itself. Epoxy on the other hand, is much easier to achieve a thicker coat with. This makes for a tremendously durable floor!
Budget: at Buffalo Concrete Coatings, epoxy coatings start at $2.50 per square foot! Polyaspartic pricing per square foot can quickly take a leap to $5 and up per square foot.
With four vital questions answered, have you come closer to a decision?
Buffalo Concrete Coatings is here to help! Call (586) 596-8602 if you have any further questions regarding which product you should use.
- Will room and/or substrate temperature be below 50 degrees Fahrenheit at the time of installation?
- Will the floor be exposed to UV radiation on a daily basis?
- How long is your window of available drying time?
- What is your budget?
